The season of giving is upon us. To inspire our readers, we’re highlighting two community organizations that are near and dear to our hearts.
Burlington Food Bank: Help Us Feed Hope to Those in Need
The Burlington Food Bank has been feeding Burlington since 1991. They are committed to ensuring that no one in Burlington struggles with hunger. If you or someone you know is hungry and in need of help, call 905.637.2273.
Supporting Burlington since 1991, the Burlington Food Bank provided food to over 8,500 Burlington residents in 2016. They receive, inspect for expiry dates, sort, and distribute food as quickly as possible and also support other food banks in the area.
While most donations are non-perishable food items, Burlington Food Bank also supplies milk, eggs, meat and fresh fruits and vegetables to clients when available. Food is sourced through corporate and individual donations, sponsorships, and through our collaborative membership with the Ontario Association of Food Banks, and Food Banks Canada.
The Gift of Giving Back: One Community. One Goal.
The Gift of Giving Back, in its 12th year, collected over 422,000 lbs of food for 6 local beneficiaries. The Burlington Food Bank is among the beneficiaries.
Founded in Burlington, Ontario in 2005, The Gift of Giving Back is now the largest food drive of its kind in Canada that supports, educates and empowers thousands of young hockey athletes, baseball athletes and high school students to compassionately give back to their community. Summer and late Fall annual initiatives are launched to Help our Kids Feed Kids in their community.
Originally launched by the Burlington Eagles, the campaign has grown to include more than 85 male and female youth hockey teams from: The Burlington Girls Hockey Club (Barracudas), Burlington Cougars and the Burlington Eagles. In 2017, The Gift of Giving Back announced that baseball teams from BOMBA have joined the cause. Together with their parents and community leaders, this translates to more than 3,500 volunteers who make this all possible.
The 2017 Gift of Giving Back is pleased to have Burlington Mall back as their lead sponsor and welcome back the following food agency beneficiaries and partners: the Salvation Army Food Bank, Burlington Food Bank , The Carpenter Hospice, The Compassion Society, Halton Women’s Place and Food for Life.
The Gift That Keeps on Giving
While most of their donations are non-perishable food items, monetary donations are always accepted to help offset fresh food purchases and operational costs. Consider making a donation today to this well respected and highly effective charitable organization.
The joy of giving has a ripple effect that makes its’ way across oceans and back to our shore. Don’t forget that there’s also the benefit of receiving a tax receipt from a registered charitable organization when you make cash donations. Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. (Calvin Coolidge)
